Today was sunny all day with 25 knot katabatic winds in the afternoon. It was warmer.

I spent all day on microscopy, photography, and sorting photos. It was a very productive day.

The quad bike quit starting, and Devin, Anne, and Tyler pushed it back to camp. None of them new what to do to figure out what was wrong. I got ready to help when Ian came back to camp. He has a lot of experience with engines, and once we found the tool kit and pulled the spark plug, we solved the problem: the plug was fouled. A new one fixed the problem. We can add "engine repair" to the list of field skills needed!

Our only means of transport besides walking is a quad bike (ATV). Today was mostly sunny and calm, with beautiful snow on the mountains.
Tyler and Ian dove today, and I handled the rope as usual. The rope pulls for Ian's dive went badly, as in the signals weren't clear. That put me off for most of the day. I don't like doing a poor job on something like handling a diver's line. There was too much slack, and the rope might have gotten caught on something. I need to really concentrate when handling the line. At least it only caused stress and didn't actually put Ian in any danger.

I did a lot of microscopy work and wandered back to camp along the south shoreline. I was very tired.Dawn Sumnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15967361551408621044noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8855317045865636173.post-16604681885633616542013-12-08T19:26:00.000-08:002014-02-14T19:26:44.166-08:00Day 12 in AntarcticaDecember 8, 2013
Happy Birthday, Dad!
There is more snow on the peaks and the Onyx River is really flowing.

I spent the morning programming in Python to look for trends in our preliminary thermister data. I don't do enough programming to remember all the data reading and processing tips. And without the internet to look them up in an instant, it took me much longer to actually get to the data. I worked on sorting out how to do a Fast Fourier Transform to look for cycles. This was really fitting for today, my dad's birthday, as a key part of his Ph.D. thesis was implementing a FFT technique to understanding nuclear data for cobalt.
Tyler dove and collected samples for me to photograph and for Anne to subsample for genomics. Anne and I spent all afternoon on the samples, and Anne worked late into the evening. I'll get an early start tomorrow to use the binocular microscope and let her have it later in the day.
In the afternoon, Ian walked 14 km of the south shoreline with a GPS unit. With 1 m of lake level rise across a shallow slope, there is a lot of new lake surface area. The old surveying benchmark is only 30 cm above lake level now!
Snow! We had flurries all afternoon. It was amazingly beautiful.

We also had an amazing thing happen: The Onyx River started flowing. The Onyx is the largest river on the continent of Antarctica, and it ends in Lake Vanda, right next to our camp. It "usually" remains frozen until late December, but it started flowing on a cold snowy day, early this year. It is true that the sun was shining up valley, so snow and ice were probably melting there.
In the morning, we cleared out some of our holes in the ice to take video of the lake floor. Ian did his third dive, retrieving the thermisters so we could see if they were working. Anne and I talked about sampling protocols for genomics, lipids, and photographs. Everyone worked on data processing. Devin worked on his DTS data, trying to figure out the best sampling protocol (see day 5).
In the afternoon, I worked on the dive tracker some more, doing some careful experiments walking in a square around the science tent. I concluded it is likely working, although the data are not interpretable by me. Without e-mail and with limited satellite phone use, we couldn't contact the students who made it to see if the data made sense. We decided to use it just in case.

Today was cold and windy.

We drilled more holes and took more video in the morning. In the afternoon, I worked on a dive tracker. The dive tracker was made by a group of students at Hobart College, Tasmania. They are working on using Arduino electronics, accelerometers, a magnetometer, and GPS to track under water autonomous vehicles. They build us one to try on Tyler to see if we can track his dives. The tracker saves the data to an SD card. We tried it out, but didn't understand the data and broke the magnetic switch. I bypassed the switch. I also did some test to see if it was actually working. I didn't come to a conclusion.
We had an almost wind-free night, which made for quiet sleeping. Our tents were flapping.

Today was Tyler's first dive and Ian's second. Tyler mostly looked around and got used to the new dive gear. Ian deployed an instrument called PAM (Pulse Amplitude Modulated spectrometer) that measures chlorophyll abundance and photosynthetic potential. We left PAM in the lake measuring two spots for most of the month we were at Lake Vanda.

After lunch, we drilled more holes in the ice and took more video. Tyler's new video system is working very well. When we've tried it before, we've had trouble getting the camera to spin properly. However, this time, we have a SeaView camera that lets us see about how far the system is above the lake floor as well as how fast it is spinning. December 4, 2013
My 47th birthday! I spend all day appreciating the fact that I was actually in Antarctica. After all the shutdown woes, Ian and Antarctica New Zealand had given me the best birthday present possible - four weeks at Lake Vanda.

I spent the morning on the microscope and cameras working with my first sample, and then helped drill more holes and drop cameras down them in the afternoon with Ian, Tyler and Anne. Devin collected more lake profile data
December 3, 2013
In the morning, Ian, Anne, Tyler and I drilled holes in the ice to measure water chemistry and to lower a camera to look at the microbial mat growing at the bottom of the lake. We had a lot of fun. Ian also did the first dive, with me handling his rope. The divers are tethered by a rope so they can find the hold again. We also used the rope for signaling. One pull meant the diver was fine. Two meant they wanted more line. Three meant pull the line in. Five or more meant there was an emergency and pull in quickly. (We never used this one.)

Ian deployed two thermisters at 26 m water depth to measure the temperature at the lake bottom and 10 cm off the bottom. This was a test to see what data we might expect for them.

Ian also brought up the first samples, and they were very interesting. Things are similar to what we saw in 2010, but after three years of thinking about the growth of the pinnacles, I saw much more than before.

We had a visitor who Devin helped with sampling for black carbon in one of our drill holes over the deepest part of the lake. She left us a bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey! Also, Scott Base sent out some cookies and candy for Christmas.
December 2, 2013
I set up the microscopes in the science tent in the morning, and it looks like our photography system will work well this year. Karl (from snow school), Deidre (reporter), and some others came out for a few hours. Karl and Deidre photographed and interviewed Ian and various other things around camp. They filmed Tyler for a profile for Antarctica New Zealand. I send a blog post out with them.

We also collected water samples for Anne to filter to look at planktonic organisms and Tyler to analyze the sulfur isotopes of sulfate and sulfide.
December 1, 2013
I felt a bit ill in the morning, but it wore off. Ian and I deployed the drop camera and tested a sediment sampler in the dive hole. We decided the sampler wasn't too useful and didn't use it again. In the afternoon, I helped Devin deploy the DTS. I don't know what the TLA stands for, but it consists of a long, industrial bundle of fiber optic lines that gets suspended in the water (to the bottom of the lake). A laser sends pulses down the line, and the reflections are timed. The strength and timing of the reflections measure the temperature of the cable in different places. The idea was to look for small temperature changes related to convection in the lake.

Deploying the cable was very stressful. It is a stiff cable and was wound backward, so we had to manipulate it a lot. It made many popping sounds, so both Devin and I were terrified we were breaking it. However, by the end of the day, Devin got a good signal, so we really felt like celebrating!Dawn Sumnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15967361551408621044noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8855317045865636173.post-3283332304382349582013-11-30T14:51:00.000-08:002014-02-09T09:53:09.935-08:00Day 4 in Antarctica

After settling in the prior evening, it was time to get down to work. I marked out 3 lines at 5 meter intervals so that we would know how far we were lowering our equipment into the lake. We drilled some holes in the ice and collected our first conductivity-temperature-depth profiles. We got our first scientific result: Lake Vanda was a meter higher than it was in 2010! We also got started on melting the dive hole. And it was warm - most of us were down to one layer on top.
November 29, 2013
I realized we didn't have a US-style extension cord or power strip. I got a ride over to McMurdo first thing in the morning to pick some up. While I was there, I caught up with Meghan, our coordinator for the cancelled USAP part of the trip. She said they were just getting things caught up, and it was really good that I pulled the Lake Joyce project this year. We would have been competing with a group putting in several camps on the Taylor glacier with 30,000 pounds of equipment! It was really hard to get them all in.

That afternoon, Anne, Devin and I flew out to Lake Vanda! The entire team was in the field on our 3rd day in Antarctica! The flight out was beautiful, of course.
Devin and I came back from camping after Ian and Tyler flew out to Lake Vanda. Anne was still at Scott Base, coordinating things from her end. We cleaned up our gear from the overnight and started helping Anne. Things were mostly done, so there was time to take some pictures of the base.Dawn Sumnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15967361551408621044noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8855317045865636173.post-25455147309810689912013-11-28T00:44:00.001-08:002013-12-02T04:34:37.699-08:00Antarctic Field Training, Kiwi StyleI spent last night in a polar (Scott) tent on an ice shelf in Antarctica. It was a "required" snow school training event since I haven't been to Antarctica with the New Zealand program before. It was warm - just below freezing - and there was no wind for the entire afternoon, evening, night and morning. Two of those on the school (Devin - part of my team - and Karl - a photographer, videographer) slept out, completely out! Karl complained that his nose got sunburned over night. Today is Karl's 22nd birthday, and he is thrilled to have started it sleeping out in Antarctica. Here he is in the back of a Hagglund (I looked on a vehicle to spell it approximately right...).
We had a great time.

Devin, Anne, and I fly to Lake Vanda mid-day tomorrow via helicopter. We are using Kiwi-style power in the field, but have a US generator to run my microscopes. However, we almost forgot an appropriate extension cord and power strip. I'll run to the US McMurdo Station in the morning to get one. (Technically, I'm getting a ride rather than running, but it is within running distance if the weather is nice. But I'm not a cross country runner like Sasha is!)
November 27, 2013
Our first day focused on training. Anne, Tyler and Ian got to just take the refresher training because they had previous taken Antarctic New Zealand Snow Skills, whereas Devin and I had the full overnight experience. Anne, Tyler and Ian started working on sorting gear after their half day, whereas Devin and I went out for camping on the snow. It was very warm with no wind. It was loads of fun, whereas the others were hard at work collecting the remaining gear, trying to figure out what had already been shipped out in the field, etc.Dawn Sumnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15967361551408621044noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8855317045865636173.post-19497098406019535722013-11-26T14:27:00.000-08:002014-02-09T09:52:11.837-08:00Day 0 in Antarctica

We returned to the boarding area at 7 am (since we had already checked our bags), and this time there was only a short delay before I was seated in a jump seat on a C-17!

We landed on the ice runway and were greeted by Scott Base personnel. We had a great briefing, started dealing with field gear, and started working out the logistics for getting our gear from the US program and organizing to send our samples and gear back through the US program.
The flight was fine - I'll post some images later. We then went into a flurry of field preparations. Tyler and Ian will go to Lake Vanda tomorrow with the rest of us following of Friday. Devin and I spend the night out in a tent as part of field training tonight.

I'm not likely to post again until we're back from the field in late Dec or early Jan unless the weather goes bad. The web cam for McMurdo shows only high clouds, but on the right
side, out on the sea ice there are some fuzzy looking buildings. (You'll have to click on the image to expand it to full size to see them.) That’s where the runway is. They look fuzzy, more fuzzy than the
mountains in the distance. That’s
probably the blowing snow.
People who tried to fly on Friday, tried again yesterday, and are supposed to be on our flight today. Our scheduled plane switched from a Hercules (run by Safair) to the C17 that was scheduled to fly on Friday.

The C17 (left) is our plane, which is much larger than the Hercules (white plane in background, which is the Safair plane chartered by the Italian program from a South African company; grey plane on the far right, which is a US Air Force one.)

Thus, our (now) scheduled plane can accommodate the increasing number of passengers and also has a bunch of cargo. Word is that it is the last C17 scheduled to fly down this year until February. Once it's "warm" near Ross Island, the big planes can't safely land and take off. Thus, they really want to get this plane and its cargo down south as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, the weather is still windy, and the runway hasn't been cleared - or more likely, they've been working on it but their work keeps getting undone by the wind. Thus, we went from a required arrival time at 6:30 am for check-in and our planned departure briefing at 9:15, to a planned departure briefing at 1:15 pm.
Today was full of science and planning. Our entire field team (Tyler, Ian, Anne,
Devin, and me) assembled at 10 am this morning at Waterways, University of
Canterbury, Christchurch, NZ. First, we
went through our hazard assessment for our field season. This included talking about our plans, how
they might change, making sure communications are clear, avoiding environmental
damage to Antarctica, avoiding damage to our bodies, training we will get at
Scott Base, etc.

We then moved on to talking about something very important:
diver safety and the signals we’ll use to communicate between the diver and the
people on top of the ice tending the dive.
In the past, we have had voice communication between the diver and the
dive tenders. This year we won’t because
we are diving under the Antarctica New Zealand program. They have different rules and equipment, and
the divers will take down their own air with them. The diver still goes through a hole we melt
in the ice. They will be tethered with a
rope to the surface that a dive tender holds and handles the entire time. They let out rope as the diver moves farther
away and pulls rope in as the diver comes back toward the hole in the ice. We’ll communicate using pulls on the
rope. One pull from the diver means “I’m
okay”. The person on top tending the
line repeats the pull to say “message received”. Two pulls from the diver says “give me more
slack on the rope”, with two pulls from the person on top to say “I heard you
ask for more slack on the rope”. Three
pulls means the person on top should pull in slack on the rope. A whole bunch of pulls means there is an
emergency, and the person on top should responsibly pull the diver back to the
hole and out of the water. We don’t
expect to need the last signal. We also
talked about pre-planning the dives, including the amount of time the diver
expects to be down, etc. This is one of
the most important safety aspects of our field program. We all agree that although the diving has the
potential to be dangerous, we will take the proper precautions and sufficiently
plan that it is unlikely anything will go wrong. It’s more likely one of us will slip on the
ice and sprain a wrist than to have a safety issue with diving.

After the dive discussion, we talked about the field
equipment we’ll have, including tents, heaters, dive hole melters, etc. as well as the science equipment.

After a break for tea, we moved on to our science
plans. We’ve been working on a document
that describes our science goals, how we intend to accomplish them, and the
equipment we need for weeks now. Today,
though, everything came together. With
the five of us in the room, we went through each goal, how we might accomplish
it, its priority, and how it might be scaled back if we run short of time. We asked ourselves and each other what data
we need to publish the scientific papers we want to write. We asked each other why we would want to
measure this parameter here or there. We
learned about new things from each other.

This was fantastically useful because we now know what each
person wants to come home with from the field season, we adjusted our plans to
fit our science goals better, we identified some new observations that will be
easy and might lead to important insights into how Lake Vanda works, and we got
to know each other much better. We ended
by laying out what observations we would target for each week we’ll be in the
field. It will all fit in with some
bad-weather days, as long as there aren’t too many delays. If there are delays, we have our work
prioritized, so we know where to cut if necessary.

All of this took until 5:30 pm! (Minus 20 minutes to get take-away from the
Asian place down the road.)

Tomorrow, we have a bit of shopping to do, and we might
address a couple more science questions after sleeping on them overnight. Also on the agenda: a BBQ party in the
afternoon. We are scheduled to fly to
Scott Base on Monday morning!

The caravan is a New Zealand classic and is exceptionally
charming. I’m loving it, especially in
the morning as the birds start waking up, the rooster crows, and the sunrise
shines in through the window. There are
both starlings and finches nesting in the shed, and I can watch them bringing
food to their chicks. Some bird loves to
run across the metal roof, the full length of the shed, making pitter-patter
noises.
shaped, all different sizes, and very tasty.

(Due to the US government shutdown, our planned field work at Lake Joyce is postponed until next year.) And we will be heading to the field at the very end of November. This is late in the year for us, and the weather should be warm as we head into the austral summer. My colleague Ian says that the temperatures likely won't fall below -10°C (14°F) even at night. During the day, temperatures will often be above freezing and will be genuinely warm inside the tents when the sun is shining. You can monitor the weather at Marble Point to get an idea of what it's like at Lake Vanda. Our wind conditions will be different, and since we are farther from the ocean, we'll have fewer clouds. (The main source of moisture in the area is the ocean.) I have never compared the temperatures between Marble Point and Lake Vanda, so there might be some systematic differences.

[UPDATE: Tyler provided a link to the weather station at Lake Vanda showing the last 72 hours of data! He write a great blog!]

One advantage of having warmer temperatures is that we don't have to bring as many clothes, and we'll be able to wear fewer layers. I won't take my brand new, super warm boots. Rather, I plan to use my old Sorels and regular hiking boots. I won't take my own down jacket either. However, both my super warm boots and jacket are already in Antarctica in with gear we shipped as cargo. They'll just hang out at Scott Base waiting for me to take them back home. Other clothing I'll leave behind includes extra sweaters and snow/ice pants. I'll provide a detailed list in the next day or two as I pack everything up.

I don't need to worry about my toothpaste or wet-wipes freezing, either. Small mouth water bottles will work, since they aren't likely to freeze shut. Many things are easier when it's warmer.

The downside of the warmer weather may be meltwater on the lake, difficulty keeping ice screws from melting out, gear melting into the lake ice very quickly, and a meltwater moat around the lake. The moat can be a big problem. We'll camp on the shore at the Vanda huts, but diving and sampling all occur on the lake ice. If there is a ring of water around the lake, it's hard to get to the ice. Fortunately, there is a small boat at Lake Vanda to solve this problem, so boating may be included in our field season this year! It all depends on the details of the temperatures this particular season. It will be fun to see how it all goes.Dawn Sumnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15967361551408621044noreply@blogger.com0
